Definition
A background check is a report on a job candidate's history. Depending on the role, it can include identity verification, criminal records, a motor vehicle record for drivers, and sometimes drug screening. When an outside company prepares it, the Fair Credit Reporting Act applies: the candidate gets a clear written disclosure and must give written permission first. The scope should fit the job. A valet needs a driving record check; a dishwasher usually does not. State and local laws limit what can be asked and when.
