E-Verify

A federal online system that checks Form I-9 information against government records.

Definition

E-Verify is an online system run by the Department of Homeland Security with the Social Security Administration. After a new hire completes Form I-9, the employer enters that information and E-Verify compares it with government records to confirm work authorization. For most private employers it is voluntary, but some states require it for some or all employers, and many federal contractors must use it. E-Verify is run after a job offer is accepted, never as a pre-screen, and must be used the same way for every new hire.
