Peak 2026 is short and steep. Thanksgiving falls on November 26, so the stretch from Black Friday (November 27) through Cyber Monday (November 30) to the mid-December ground-shipping cutoffs is compressed into about three weeks, and Christmas lands on a Friday. If your building ships consumer orders, this guide gives you the dates, what temp warehouse labor actually pays this year, and a week-by-week plan you can start on October 1.

What is different about peak 2026

This is the 2026 companion to our evergreen guide, how to plan warehouse staffing for peak season, which covers the math (volume → labor hours → headcount). Here we focus on what is specific to this year. If you want a crew booked rather than a plan, see peak season warehouse staffing.

Fewer big seasonal hiring announcements, more flexible labor

Last year retailers added 461,500 seasonal jobs in the fourth quarter, the smallest holiday hiring wave since 2008 and 15% below 2024, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Its outlook for 2026 (published September 23, 2026) expects roughly 450,000, and notes that Amazon, Target and other large employers had not published 2026 seasonal headcounts by late September, a shift toward on-demand and existing-staff coverage instead of large net-new hiring waves.

What that means on the floor: the labor market for pickers, packers and loaders is less crowded with mega-employer recruiting campaigns than it was two years ago, but the buildings that do ramp are running leaner, so a single no-show wave in the last week of November hurts more.

Pay expectations are set by the big operators

Amazon's published starting wage for warehouse roles is at least $21 per hour, and 3PLs such as Geodis advertised seasonal pay up to $26.24 per hour in September 2026. Temp workers know these numbers. If your posted rate for a picker is far below the local median, expect slower fills and more turnover.

Minimum wage steps up in Florida during peak

Florida's minimum wage rises from $14.00 to $15.00 per hour on September 30, 2026 (tipped cash wage $10.98 → $11.98). Chicago moved to $17.05 and Los Angeles to $18.42 on July 1, 2026; Denver is at $19.29 for 2026. Budget seasonal labor on the rate that applies in November, not the one on last year's PO.

What temp warehouse labor pays in 2026

These are median hourly wages reported to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for May 2025, the most recent metro data available (released spring 2026). They are what workers in each metro actually earn in these jobs across all employers, not our bill rates. Bill rates from a W-2 agency sit above these numbers because they include payroll taxes, workers' comp, insurance and recruiting; see our published rates.

Two things to take from the table. First, forklift operators cost roughly $4–$9 an hour more than general labor everywhere, so order forklift hours only for forklift work and keep certified operators off the pack line. Second, in the Florida metros the median for pickers and packers sits within a dollar or two of the new $15.00 minimum wage, so a rate a little above the median buys you noticeably better attendance for very little money.

Week-by-week plan from October 1

Week of Oct 1: wave one

Order a small core crew (10–20% of your peak seasonal headcount) on recurring shifts, same workers each day. Train them thoroughly; they become your peak-week leads. Write the shift order properly: process, equipment, pace, PPE, start time, who to report to. How to write a shift order.

Weeks of Oct 12 and Oct 19: forklift evaluations and cross-training

Under OSHA's powered industrial truck rule (29 CFR 1910.178), every operator has to be trained and evaluated on your trucks in your building before they drive, even with a certificate from another job. Do it now, on quiet days, not on November 30. Cross-train wave one on two functions each so you can move people as volume shifts between receiving, picking and loading. More in our guide to forklift certification.

Week of Oct 26: lock wave two

Confirm the bulk of your seasonal headcount for a start between November 2 and November 16. Confirm second-shift and weekend coverage now; those are the hardest slots to fill late.

Weeks of Nov 2 and Nov 9: wave two arrives

Fifteen-minute safety orientation for every new worker on day one: pedestrian lanes, dock rules, PPE, exits, a named lead for every temp group. Pair new workers with wave one. Expect first-week productivity to run well below your veterans' rate and plan headcount accordingly.

Week of Nov 16: dress rehearsal

Run one full-volume day. Fix pick-path, staging and dock bottlenecks now. Confirm the Thanksgiving-week roster in writing with every worker.

Week of Nov 23: Thanksgiving week

Short week. Confirm Friday–Sunday coverage by Tuesday. Book a daily flex crew for Nov 27–Dec 4 sized to your forecast, and keep a standby list.

Nov 30 – Dec 18: peak

Daily flex orders against actual volume. Rate every worker after every shift and keep a favorites list; the same 20 people all December are worth far more than 20 new faces a day. Watch overtime: a 50-hour week for a temp is cheaper than a no-show, but a 60-hour week is where injuries happen.

Dec 19 – Jan 15: wind-down and returns

Drop outbound headcount as cutoffs pass, move your best people to returns and year-end counts, and ask about temp-to-hire for anyone you want to keep. Then send your favorites list back to your staffing partner so next year's wave one is already trained.

Common ways peak 2026 goes wrong

  • Ordering in November. The buildings that lose peak are the ones that start hiring the week volume spikes. In every metro above, wave-one orders placed in the first half of October get the best workers.
  • Paying last year's rate. With Florida at $15.00 from September 30 and the big operators advertising $21 and up, a $14 picker rate will fill slowly and turn over fast.
  • Generic "general labor" orders. Name the process and the equipment. A picker with RF-scanner experience, a trailer unloader and a certified forklift operator are three different orders at three different rates.
  • No lead for the temp crew. Someone on your team has to own check-in, breaks, questions and end-of-shift ratings. Without that person, attendance drifts.
  • Skipping the forklift evaluation. Certification from another employer does not satisfy OSHA at your site. Build 30–60 minutes into the first shift.

How Crew Staffing Pros staffs peak

We supply W-2 warehouse workers (pickers, packers, loaders, material handlers, forklift operators and inventory associates) with workers' comp and payroll handled by us, published indicative rates, a written no-show guarantee and a live dispatcher who confirms every order. You can book recurring shifts with the same workers, add a daily flex crew during peak, and convert the people you want to keep.

Send us your weekly volume forecast and shift pattern and we will turn it into a staffing plan with indicative costs: request a peak crew or see warehouse and logistics staffing.

Quick answers

When should I place peak-season warehouse staffing orders for 2026?

Wave one in the first two weeks of October, wave two by the last week of October for a November 2–16 start, and daily flex crews booked at least 48 hours ahead during peak.

What should I pay temp warehouse workers in Florida during peak 2026?

Florida's minimum wage is $15.00 from September 30, 2026. The May 2025 BLS medians in South Florida are $13.45 for packers, $18.55 for general warehouse labor and $22.99 for forklift operators; paying at or a little above the median is what fills shifts reliably.

Do temp forklift operators need to be re-evaluated at my site?

Yes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 requires training and an evaluation on your equipment in your facility before an operator drives, and re-evaluation at least every three years or after an incident.

How many extra workers do I need for peak?

Convert your daily volume forecast to labor hours by function using your own units-per-hour rates (lower for new workers), then divide by shift length and add an absence allowance. The evergreen guide walks through it: warehouse peak-season staffing plan.
